Stakeholders in Nigeria’s livestock sector have validated harmonised national protocols aimed at strengthening the characterisation, inventory and monitoring of Animal Genetic Resources to support livestock breeding, conservation and data driven policymaking.

The initiative was coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization and other development partners. The Abuja workshop brought together government authorities, genetic experts, researchers, livestock breeders, policymakers and private sector stakeholders.

Participants approved protocols covering animal genetic characterisation, inventory systems, conservation plans for endangered breeds, data collection templates and monitoring frameworks. Stakeholders also endorsed the proposed Nigerian Domestic Animal Diversity Information System and an Animal Genetic Resources Dashboard to strengthen breed monitoring and livestock data management.

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development stated that the initiative will improve livestock breeding systems, strengthen conservation efforts, support food security and guide future investment and policy decisions across Nigeria’s livestock sector.
